The province of Yunnan is considered a exemplary region: it has a good polycentric planning in relation with urbanisation and traffic and has a good economic performance. Dujia, located at 103° east longitude and 23°55' north latitude, is far away from any urban region, but still cannot escape the problems that globalisation brings about. Normally people grow wet rice in paddy fields for their own consumption, but also sugarcane or maize on mountain slopes for cash (maize is either sold on the market or used to feed pigs that are both for their own consumption or for sale). So agricultural farming is the basis for their existence, they have no other ways to survive because transportation facilities are not very well developed. Topics of SUCCESS are: Ecology: problems with deforestation (timber-trade) Socio-cultural: co-operation with Yi-nationality 彝族 and Han-Chinese people on the basis of a long-time process of cultural exchange (for instance, most people are bilingual Economy: We will study the existing combination of three economic patterns: Mountain-top-economy (mostly timber), mountain-slope-economy( mostly paddy and maize fields), and basin economy (mixed economy: agriculture and irrigation is easy, traffic is convenient and market is nearby). On this basis we will show how ecological economy can organize partnerships between the different economic patterns into a win-win-situation of all partners.

杜家村位于云南省境内。云南是一个非常具有典型意义的地区。它是一个多民族聚居区,自然生态环境良好,旅游资源丰富。同时在区域规划中,从城市化以及交通运输等方面综合考虑,采取了多中心布局的方式,同时全省经济形势良好。杜家村,位于北纬23°55’,东经103°。远离其它城市,属于偏远地区。但是,尽管如此,村中仍然无法逃脱“全球化”所代表的种种问题的困扰。
