Total land area: 7443 mu (1 hectare=15 mu; ~500 ha); Crop land area: 4883 mu (~326 ha); Vegetable land area: 1362 mu (~91 ha). Rurbanisation - the expanding of urban lifestyles into the rural environment - is a main problem in Europe as well as in China. For the first case study we choose a village in the suburban region of Hebei province near the capital Beijing in order to show the direct effects of the growing metropolis on its former rural hinterland. Participant 4 has already started an empowerment process in these suburban conditions to find policies for accompanying this process from a rural to an urban condition. Therefore, we will give special emphasis on poverty-alleviation. The urban-rural partnership in our project will concentrate on the main existing problem, namely agro-economy, taking into account the ecological aspect. The dwellers are working on plans to grow non-polluted vegetables and want to establish a marketing-structure for these products. Another resource for agro-economy is the plan to grow poplar trees (fast growing species) on an area of 1000 mu (~ 67 ha). On the other hand they want to reduce the cereal production in the village. Beisuzha is an official model village. This will guarantee good impacts for dissemination all over China. Besides the support from the village committee, SUCCESS can work with policy support from the government, from the district and from the township.

北苏闸村位于河北省衡水地区邓庄乡。该村位于城市的近郊,紧邻首都北京。从村落的发展可以看出“都市化”进程对于以前曾是农业贫困村的影响。“Success”项目组成员CIAD曾在该村有良好的工作及群众基础。CIAD已经开始通过行之有效的途径,在这些城郊结合部开展研究工作,力图为“乡村的城市化进程”提供政策咨询。因此,“Success”项目将对该村的“脱贫”研究给予特别关注。
